Status Update

Hello to all my friends out there. I know people have asked when I’ll be back and I have been trying, honestly I have. The trouble is for me to be creative I have to be happy, and sadly I have been running low on happiness. To compound the issue, I got into Zentangle® due to my now ex-wife, so there is some heartache there. It is not enough to keep me away from Zentangle, but has slowed me down. I have been looking at my adventures and I have decided the new path they will take. I will be posting the 1^st new one on January 3^rd of 2014, and then every Friday thereafter. I hope you all enjoy the new direction, and look forward to tangling with all of you throughout 2014.

Another Delay…

Well this is "MY" year for me that’s for sure….

I have made it back from Gen-Con, but the week is not going well. 1^st I picked up a pretty nasty sinus infection while I was there. 2^nd when I got home my lap-top was dead. The good news is I have it under warranty, but I have to send it in to be fixed. So I am without a computer for 7-12 days, while it is shipped and fixed. So as I cannot upload photos to my system or edit them the adventure is on fold for 2 weeks while I wait on my system to be fixed.

Look for a new post come September 7^th 2013, I may make a few changes to the format of the site & adventure, but I will be back. Sorry about the troubles this year, it has sure been one heck of a year for me!

Adventure in Monotangles #20 – Cockles-n-Mussels

Again this will be a short post, because it is an early post, and because I am in the middle of prepping to go to Gen-Con. As I plan on lots of fun at Gen-con I decided on Cockles n mussels as the tangle to use. This is a tangle by Margaret Bremner, and is a new one for me. An Update….Adventures will begin again next week

First let me start off by saying I am sorry I have been away, but things seem to just keep getting better. As anyone who has been following me this year knows 2013 has not been my best year. Let us see since I decided I was going to start working out anything and everything that could go wrong has. A couple weeks ago I did sprain my shoulder, last week I had a doctors appointment and by then my arm was mostly better, but the next day the pain was back with a vengeance. I still have limited use of the arm, and I’ll see the doctor again next week. Also my sty is starting to make another appearance On top of all the medical issues, my wife and I have decided to separate. Though we are still and will remain friends, we are both walking different paths. We have decided that we make better friends than spouses, and we will each travel our own path. Though this is for the best, it is still a difficult time for me. Packing and moving, and adjusting to a new schedule has prevented me from updating the site. I ask that anyone here who is also on Facebook not mention it there as I am not sure whom Martha has shared this with.

Thank you for your understanding and I look forward to seeing you here next week for a new adventure.

Sorry about this, but is moving stuff in Tuesday, I sprained my shoulder, and I am not really able to tangle. Typing is a big enough pain. We shall hope it is better before next week, if not I may be tangling with my mouth =D

Adventures in Monotangles #16 – Crescent Moon

Well unless you have been living under a rock the last week, you probable already know that during the last week two interesting natural phenomena happened. The first was that we have truly moved into summer here in the northern hemisphere, with last Friday June 21^st being our Summer Solstice. The second being the over June 22^nd & 23^rd we got to see a “Super Moon” This means that the Moon was at perigee — or at its closest point in its orbit to Earth, and was 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full Moons of 2013.

Well with all of the Talk about the “Super Moon,” I figured it was time to make the 1^st Tangle taught in many Zentangle® classes, the focus of this weeks Adventure. The tangle is Crescent moon, a tangle I had been holding back for a special occasion, and I guess this week is it.

This week I am also beginning something new with the Adventure. I will be creating a Step-out for the Tangle, used in the adventure. At the top of the Blog is a new Tab called “Step-Outs,” all of the adventures will be listed there with a Link to the Step out for the Tangle from that adventure.

Adventures in Monotangles #15 – Betweed

Another week has passed, and that means it is time for another Adventure in Monotangles. Over the last week I have been thinking about my CZT training class, and the great time I had, and the great people I met there.  This helped me decide on the tangle for this week.  While at the class we spent a decent amount of time on Betweed, a tangle I had not done before my CZT class. I had trouble with it for a while, but now I really enjoy it. I know there are many who have a love/hate relationship with Betweed,  but that is part of what this adventure is all about.  Remember Zentangle® should not cause stress, just watch the video, relax, breath and let betweed flow from your pen. Once you get it, it really is simple, and very relaxing.

Adventures in Monotangles #14 - Hollibaugh

So another week has passed. Which is a good thing as that makes it time for another Adventure. This week I decided to choose a pattern that has always been one of my favorites. When I say always, I guess i mean since I learned Zentangle®, as it was one of the tangles I learned in my very 1st class.

A few updates on me and the sight, Though the pain is gone from the Shingles, I am still having good and bad days. I have never experienced something that makes me this lethargic before. I am at least making through each day, and I have started Zentangling again. I have also started working on some updates to the web site...They will go up in the next few weeks. I have began work on the past slide shows also. They will be up soon. Thanks for putting up with me over the last few months, I hope I am getting all my injuries/illnesses out of the way for the next couple years =D.

Adventures in Monotangles #13 - SHARD

 Wow well we have hit week 13 (14 really,) it seems time really does fly. I guess the good news is that after 3ish weeks I am feeling decent, not 100%, but better. I forced myself to go to the gym today, I did not run long, but it was something. The running this morning was interesting, as it was my 1^st run in my new shoes: Vibram FiveFingers Bikila Shoes. I love these - but I have to re-learn how to run.

Well I am getting this adventure up, and will be working on the slide shows soon, and other changes I want to make to the blog.

Well as last weeks adventure was one of the curvy sort, I figured I’d find a nice straight tangle for this week. I poked around and found this little gem created by CZT® Carole Ohl. The tangle for this week is Shard. I had a bit of fun with it, and it was nice to be tangling again.

Adventures in Monotangles #12 – Verve

OK Sadly I am still not feeling the best, but I am much better than I was last week at this time. Let me just say two things about The Shingles…. 1) I would not wish them on my worst enemy, 2) I am so happy I went to the doctor right away as it is nowhere near as bad as it could be.

I am at least getting this Adventure up this week, the Tangle I decided on was I think the 1^st tangle I ever used in a Monotangle, outside of the CZT training. The tangle is Verve,

Adventures in Monotangles #11 – Fengle

Another week has gone by….

This one has been pretty good, aside from Tuesday, we do not speak of Tuesday. Well after the last month, being sick, pulling a Muscle in my back and bruising my ribs, my plans to start working out crumbled. Over the last week I have been able to resurrect it. I have cut soda out of my diet, and I have been bringing chopped salads to work for lunch.

I have also been making it to the Gym in the AM, to work on getting my lungs back into shape (growing up with two 3 pack a day smokers gave me very bad lungs.) The in the evening a few times a week I am either hitting the weights or playing racquet ball. I think I may add the 7 Minute workout in once a day also.  I am also thinking as a cool down before bed I am going to add in a 10-20 minute stretch routine.

This weeks Adventure is designed to make me work my mind. Fengle, is a tangle, I love, but I almost always do it exactly the same. So when I chose it, I used more arm, made the lines thinner, shaded inside out, and added flourishes. I am pretty happy with the results.

Adventures in Monotangles #10 – HI-CS

Well, it has been another one of those weeks…

It started a week ago on Monday; I discovered that our Toilet was leaking. I had a full week, and plans for Saturday, so I put down a bucket to catch the slow drip, and plan on fixing last Sunday.  Well when I took it apart, the idiot who installed it used epoxy to glue down the front. This caused the front to crack, which is OK as it was cracked elsewhere.  However, this was an expense I was not planning on. Well as we had guests this weekend, I had parked downtown, so when I need to go get a new toilet (no one was home at the time.) So I got the new toilet, and got home to install it, and I was working on the cat ran under my feet, and in trying not to step on it, I tripped, and fell. As there was a shattered toilet in the tub I did my best to avoid it, but this resulted in my landing on my ribs right on the edge of the tub. Lucky for me I did not break my ribs but they are bruised.  This has been making any tangling difficult as it hurts to move my right arm. It is sad as I can use Zentangle® to help with pain, but when doing it causes pain it makes me sad.

I was able to at least get this this week’s adventure done.  I had lots of plans for week 10, but I am happy with what I done.  The tangle I decided on is both straight, and curved.  I did enjoy this Tangle, I hope you do also.

Adventures in Monotangles #9 – ‘NZEPPEL

Well this is week nine, where does the tie go. This week has been interesting. Over the weekend I spent way too much time on Tanglepattens.com, deciding which tangle to use this week. As number nine is one of my favorite numbers I wanted something special. Well yesterday I sat down, to do a tile for the adventure, and started tangling.  As can happen in Zentangle® what came out of my pen was not the Tangle I planned. So I will postpone the previously chosen tangle, and allow ‘Nzepple to be the pattern for this week. I really love Nzepple as a tangle, so I am in no way surprised this happened. I ended up doing a large tangle, then filled each section of the tangle with a smaller version of the tangle, I really like how this turned out.

Nine is a composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 3. It is 3 times 3 and hence the third square number. Nine is a Motzkin number. It is the first composite lucky number, along with the first composite odd number.

Nine is the highest single-digit number in the decimal system. It is the second non-unitary square prime of the form (p2) and the first that is odd. All subsequent squares of this form are odd. It has a unique aliquot sum 4 which is itself a square prime. Nine is; and can be, the only square prime with an aliquot sum of the same form. The aliquot sequence of nine has 5 members (9,4,3,1,0) this number being the second composite member of the 3-aliquot tree. It is the aliquot sum of only one number the discrete semiprime 15.

There are nine Heegner numbers.

Since 9 = 321, 9 is an exponential factorial.

8 and 9 form a Ruth-Aaron pair under the second definition that counts repeated prime factors as often as they occur.

In bases 12, 18 and 24, nine is a 1-automorphic number and in base 6 a 2-automorphic number (displayed as '13').

A polygon with nine sides is called a nonagon or enneagon] A group of nine of anything is called an ennead.

In base 10 a number is divisible by nine if and only if its digital root is 9. That is, if you multiply nine by any natural number, and repeatedly add the digits of the answer until it is just one digit, you will end up with nine:

2 × 9 = 18 (1 + 8 = 9)

3 × 9 = 27 (2 + 7 = 9)

9 × 9 = 81 (8 + 1 = 9)

121 × 9 = 1089 (1 + 0 + 8 + 9 = 18; 1 + 8 = 9)

There are other interesting patterns involving multiples of nine:

12345679 x 9 = 111111111

12345679 x 18 = 222222222

12345679 x 81 = 999999999

This works for all the multiples of 9. n = 3 is the only other n > 1 such that a number is divisible by n if and only if its digital root is n. In base N, the divisors of N − 1 have this property. Another consequence of 9 being 10 − 1, is that it is also a Kaprekar number.

The difference between a base-10 positive integer and the sum of its digits is a whole multiple of nine. Examples:

The sum of the digits of 41 is 5, and 41-5 = 36. The digital root of 36 is 3+6 = 9, which, as explained above, demonstrates that it is divisible by nine.

The sum of the digits of 35967930 is 3+5+9+6+7+9+3+0 = 42, and 35967930-42 = 35967888. The digital root of 35967888 is 3+5+9+6+7+8+8+8 = 54, 5+4 = 9.

Subtracting two base-10 positive integers that are transpositions of each other yields a number that is a whole multiple of nine. Examples:

41 - 14 = 27 (2 + 7 = 9)

36957930 - 35967930 = 990000, a multiple of nine.

This works regardless of the number of digits that are transposed. For example, the largest transposition of 35967930 is 99765330 (all digits in descending order) and its smallest transposition is 03356799 (all digits in ascending order); subtracting pairs of these numbers produces:

99765330 - 35967930 = 63797400; 6+3+7+9+7+4+0+0 = 36; 3+6 = 9.

99765330 - 03356799 = 96408531; 9+6+4+0+8+5+3+1 = 36; 3+6 = 9.

35967930 - 03356799 = 32611131; 3+2+6+1+1+1+3+1 = 18; 1+8 = 9.

Casting out nines is a quick way of testing the calculations of sums, differences, products, and quotients of integers, known as long ago as the 12th Century.

Every prime in a Cunningham chain of the first kind with a length of 4 or greater is congruent to 9 mod 10 (the only exception being the chain 2, 5, 11, 23, 47).

Six recurring nines appear in the decimal places 762 through 767 of pi. This is known as the Feynman point.

If an odd perfect number is of the form 36k + 9, it has at least nine distinct prime factors.

If you divide a number by the amount of 9s corresponding to its number of digits, the number is turned into a repeating decimal. (e.g. 274/999 = 0.274274274274...)

Nine is the binary complement of number six:

9 = 1001

6 = 0110

Adventures in Monotangles #8 – PHICOPS

Well it looks as if I am getting this weeks adventure posted on time, which makes me happy. Yesterday I was not so sure this would happen. The process I normally use in creating an adventure is as follows:

1:         The weekend before, I’ll select a Tangle for the upcoming weeks adventure.

2:         Monday & Tuesday, I’ll think about it, what I want to post, and decide on a string to use. I do not decide in advance what the tile will look like, as I prefer my tiles to be spontaneous.

3:         Wednesday, on my lunch hour I’ll create a the piece for the adventure, I often do Zentangle® on my lunch, as it is so relaxing.

4:         Wednesday Night, I’ll pre-type the blog post and have it ready so I can just publish it Thursday Morning.

5:         Thursday, after getting back from Grocery shopping in the early AM, I’ll publish the Adventure for the week.

Things were on track this week, until Tuesday night, when I was doing laundry. I went to the basement and lo and behold, the water was not draining. Well everything else screeched to a halt, I have had this problem before and it is not good. I tried the easy fix, ran to Home Depot and got industrial strength main line cleaner. Tuesday night I used all of it, adding an application every hour or so. By the end of the night the water was moving just a little. I hoped that it would be OK in the morning, it was not. If anything it was worse. I went to the YMCA, to shower, and went to work for a couple hours (I am the only one in the office from 8AM-9AM,) so I figured I should go in. I stayed a couple hours and then headed home to get to work. By lunch I thought I had I cleared, but after lunch it was slow again. After more snaking and the use of a Blow-bag, I got it. It should be good now. Then it was clean-up time. Got the basement scrubbed down with bleach, ran out and got dinner, did shopping (as I was going to work early Thursday.) Once all of that was done it was 9:00 PM, I broke out my Tangle kit and watching/listening to the TV show Vikings, I got my Tile done for this weeks Adventure. I have to say If I had not been so busy I would have done more than one, I really like this weeks Tangle.

Now sometimes when choosing a Tangle, I’ll simply choose one that is one of my favorites. I often try to switch between, organic, and ridged tangles. This week I decided to explore Zentangle a little bit more. I headed over to tangle patterns.com and looked around for one that fit two criteria, one: it looked fun, two: I had never done it before. The winner this week was Phiscops, I think it was love at 1^st tangle. I am now a huge fan of this tangle, if you have not used it before, give it a try, it is lots of fun.

Diva's Weekly Challenge #115

Well it is time again for the Diva’s Weekly Challenge, this time it is Number 115. This weeks challenge is an Earth day Challenge. This year for Earth-Day, and my wife’s birthday we volunteered at a local nature center. We were supposed to spend the time pulling garlic Mustard (an invasive species of plant here,) however with this being a cooler spring, the plants were not very large, and pulling them would be difficult. The nature center decided that our group could work on clearing an area for a Natural playscape. This was a bit of fun, as I still enjoy having to lift and move heavy objects. There were a large number of fallen trees and limbs that had to be hauled out, or chopped up and hauled out.

As I was dealing with trees, for Earth day, I decided to do a Tree Tile for the challenge. I decided this needed both color, and glitter. =D

Adventures in Monotangles #7 – ONAMATO

Welcome to another wonderful week in the Adventures in Monotangles. It is amazing how fast time goes, it seems like just the other day I started this Adventure.

This is a great week, as yesterday was my wife’s birthday. This weekend to celebrate she is organizing a few friends to go to a local nature center and pull invasive weeds. We will most likely do dinner and a movie afterwards also. I love that for her birthday she is getting people to get out into nature, and to have them help out.

This week I have chosen the tangle Onamato, as our adventure. It is interesting that the reason I decided on it was that there are so many tangelations for this tangle. Then when I did my tile I just used the basic version. That is one of the things I love about Zentanglr®, as it is unplanned, so even when you think you may know how it will turn out, you can surprise yourself.

The Diva’s Weekly Challenge #114

Another Monday is here!

Though many people dread Mondays, I find myself looking forward to them, as they bring yet another Diva’s Zentangle® challenge. Even though I am working my way through all of her earlier challenges, I find myself waiting to see what each Monday will bring. This week was the a star challenge, and as I had just done a star in my redoing the early ones I was at a bit of a loss. I hear star & Zentangle, and I think Auraknot. As that is what I did for the 1^st star challenge, and was this weeks adventure, I decided I should go a different direction. I love Paradox, and the triangles of the Ohio Star was perfect for them. I put it on a simple background of W2, and I am pleased with the results.

Adventures in Monotangles #5 – Slideshow

Well it is that time again, another adventure is coming to a close, and the slideshow is finished. Please do not feel that this means you cannot not still take part in this adventure, if you have not done it yet, give it a shot. I love all of the variations of the Tangle “W2” in this show. From a simple tangle, that is pretty ridged on it’s creation, an amazing number of tiles were born. I love each and every one of the following tiles. Everyone did a wonderful job.

Adventures in Monotangles #6 Auraknot

Man where does the time go!

As I have mentioned in a previous post this has been a crazy week, and again I am sorry this is late. Between the crazy week, and wanting to rip my own head off, everything is a little late this week.

The Adventure this week takes us to a Tangle that is perfect for monotangles. It also happens to be another of my favorite tangles. This week your adventure should you choose to accept it is a little tangle called Auraknot. Here is a link to it on tangle patterns. If you have not already watched the video I recommend you do, it make the tangle easier to understand, and I just love watching Maria do any Zentangle®.

Part of the reason this is late is I was working on a ZIA, that had 5 Auraknots linked together, and with my headaches, it just did not (or knot) workout, so I had to do another piece.

Better late than never!

This was a rough weekend. The school I work for did our 1^st administration of the MPRS (Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination.) As I am the one who organizes these things, the last week was a little stressful. Then on the 1^st Saturday of the month I run a Role-Plating game, based off the Dresden Files (If you have not read these books do so now!) So after the crazy Saturday, I took it easy Sunday.

I was hoping to post this Tuesday, but with the weather change, and spring coming my allergies are in full effect, and I ended up going home from work early yesterday, drugging myself and going to bed. I am still feeling blah, but the drugs are making me functional.

Adventures in Monotangles #5

Welcome to another week in the Adventures of Monotangles. Tonight was a great night, as it was my wife’s monthly shamanic journey circle, so I was able to sit on the couch and tangle and listen to the drumming coming from the living room. If you have never done Zentangle® to rhythmic drumming I cannot recommend it enough. As both practices lower your mind into a meditative state, it is a double dose of relaxation. The fact that tonight was the circle also reminded me that I really want to start tangling the drum I bought. I think I will start taking it to work with me and work on it on my lunch hours.

This week’s adventure is another set tangle. As last week was a curvy organic tangle that was an official tangle without a published step out, this week’s will be the opposite. The tangle for this week it very straight, (curved lines make it a different tangle) and there is a step out, it is even on Tanglepatterns.com.  The pattern for this week is W2, the Tanglepatterens page for it is here.

I did two different tiles for this challenge, the 1^st I used W2 as a string, then used W2 inside it is different sizes.

The second one I used both a ripped open paper effect, and romancy effect under that.

Ongoing Monotangle challenge. As a bonus challenge starting this week and going for the next 20 weeks, I am proposing a 20 sided challenge. Below is a link to a template for creating a 20-sided 3D object.  I print the pattern out on card stock and trace a triangle on the back side each week.  When finished you will be able to fold it up, and roll it to decide on a pattern if you are drawing a blank. When I did this before I taped a penny on the inside of each side to give it weight.
